Thai Massage vs Oil Massage in Gulshan Dhaka | Melody Thai Spa

Thai Massage vs Oil Massage:
Which One Is Right for You?

Two of the most popular massage styles, both incredible in different ways. Here’s how to choose based on what your body needs.

Thai Massage vs Oil Massage — Quick Overview

If you’ve browsed our service menu and felt torn between Traditional Thai Massage and an Aromatherapy Oil Massage, you’re not alone. Both are among the most requested treatments in Gulshan Dhaka, but they serve very different purposes.

Thai Massage

No oil, no lotion. You’re fully clothed on a mat. The therapist uses stretching, compression, and acupressure to realign your body. Think of it as assisted yoga without the work.

Oil Massage

Warm oil applied on bare skin with long, flowing strokes. Deep relaxation, muscle release, and aromatherapy benefits. Think of it as deep relaxation with therapeutic benefits.

Bottom line: Thai = energising & flexibility. Oil = relaxing & muscle recovery. One isn’t better — they’re different tools for different goals.

How the Techniques Differ

Thai Massage Technique

Thai massage is performed on a comfortable mat on the floor. You wear loose, comfortable clothing. The therapist uses their hands, thumbs, elbows, knees, and feet to apply pressure and move your body through yoga-like stretches. There’s no oil involved.

The session follows Sen lines (energy pathways in Thai tradition) to release blocked energy. The pace is rhythmic and steady, with each stretch held long enough to create real release.

Oil Massage Technique

Oil massage is performed on a heated massage bed. You undress to your comfort level and are draped with a towel. The therapist warms premium essential oil (lavender, eucalyptus, lemongrass) and applies it with long gliding strokes, kneading, and circular motions.

The oil reduces friction, allowing deeper pressure without discomfort. The aromatherapy element means you’re inhaling therapeutic scents throughout the session.

Which Massage Is Best for You?

Choose Thai Massage if you:

  • Want to improve flexibility and mobility
  • Prefer to stay fully clothed during the session
  • Feel sluggish and need an energy boost
  • Enjoy stretching and active bodywork
  • Are new to massage and want something approachable

Choose Oil Massage if you:

  • Need deep muscle relief after workouts or long workdays
  • Struggle with stress, anxiety, or poor sleep
  • Want a pampering, luxurious experience
  • Have dry skin or want skin nourishment benefits
  • Prefer a relaxing, passive experience
Pro tip from our therapists: Many guests alternate between the two. Thai massage on the weekend for energy, oil massage mid-week for stress relief. Some even combine them in longer sessions for the complete experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get both Thai and oil massage in one session?

Yes! Our therapists can combine both techniques in a 90 or 120-minute session. We call it a fusion massage. Call ahead to book.

Is Thai massage painful?

Not painful — but it can be intense if you’re not flexible. Good therapists work within your range. You control the pressure level.

Which is better for back pain?

Both help, but differently. Thai massage stretches and realigns the spine. Oil massage releases muscle tension around the area. Many guests with chronic back pain alternate both.

Do I need to shower after each?

Thai massage uses no oil so you can go about your day immediately. Oil massage leaves oil on your skin — we recommend showering after (we have clean facilities).

Which is better for first-timers?

Thai massage is more approachable since you stay clothed. But oil massage is more relaxing. Tell your therapist it’s your first time and they’ll adjust accordingly.
